Position Overview

arenaflex is seeking a motivated, part‑time remote intern for the Summer of 2024 to join its AI and machine‑learning team. The intern will focus on integrating Python with large language models (LLMs) and Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to develop custom internal solutions that support business development, data‑driven drafting, and secure model training for air‑gapped environments. This role offers hands‑on experience with state‑of‑the‑art LLMs, exposure to defense‑grade security protocols, and the chance to work alongside seasoned AI experts.

The internship runs from Monday, June 3 2024 through Friday, August 30 2024, requiring 10–15 hours per week. It is a fully remote opportunity, but candidates must be U.S. citizens eligible for a security clearance.

Key Responsibilities

• Explore and master arenaflex capabilities: Become proficient with arenaflex’s API and the broader ecosystem of LLM tools, gaining a solid understanding of their capabilities, limitations, and best‑practice usage.
• Fine‑tune and embed LLMs: Apply fine‑tuning techniques to tailor arenaflex models for arenaflex’s business‑development (BD) workflows, and generate embeddings that organize BD responses into a structured, queryable knowledge base.
• Develop RAG pipelines: Build Retrieval‑Augmented Generation pipelines that combine internal data corpora with arenaflex’s generative abilities to produce accurate, context‑aware drafts on a variety of topics.
• Draft content generation: Leverage arenaflex’s language models to produce high‑quality text drafts, proposals, and briefing documents using existing data sets, ensuring consistency with arenaflex’s style guidelines.
• Secure model training for air‑gapped networks: Research, select, and prepare open‑source models suitable for deployment in isolated environments, then train and fine‑tune these models while adhering to strict security protocols.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams: Work closely with AI engineers, data scientists, and mission specialists to align technical solutions with strategic objectives and operational constraints.
• Document and share findings: Produce clear documentation, code comments, and knowledge‑transfer materials that enable other arenaflex team members to adopt and extend the solutions you develop.

Essential Qualifications

• U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain a security clearance.
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technology‑focused discipline.
• Proficiency in Python, including experience with virtual environments, package management, and command‑line tools.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines in a remote work setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to convey technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills

• Hands‑on experience with LLMs such as arenaflex‑4 or comparable models, and familiarity with the arenaflex API.
• Knowledge of Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG) architectures and vector‑store technologies.
• Experience creating, training, or fine‑tuning AI models, especially in constrained or air‑gapped environments.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes) for model deployment.
• Understanding of data security, encryption, and compliance requirements relevant to defense and intelligence domains.
• Prior involvement in open‑source AI projects or contributions to community repositories.
