Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our rapidly expanding Data Ventures division. In this role, you will design, develop, and maintain the data pipelines, integration layers, and analytical architectures that fuel our enterprise-wide decision-making. You will work closely with data scientists, business analysts, software engineers, and product stakeholders to solve some of the most complex and exciting challenges in modern retail technology.

As a Senior Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a critical role in extracting, transforming, modeling, and governing data across a vast, multi-petabyte environment. You will architect solutions that enable downstream analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence capabilities—all while ensuring data quality, governance, and regulatory compliance. This is a full-time opportunity based in California, offering a competitive annual compensation package of $70,000–$80,000, along with comprehensive benefits and abundant opportunities for career advancement.

Key Responsibilities

Data Transformation and Integration

  • Extract data from multiple identified databases and source systems using industry-best techniques and tools.
  • Design and build robust, scalable data pipelines that transform raw data into clean, structured, and meaningful assets.
  • Apply modern analytics trends and techniques to ensure that transformation logic is efficient, reliable, and future-proof.
  • Develop integration layers that consolidate data from disparate sources into unified, governed repositories.

Data Source Identification and Quality Assurance

  • Support the prioritization of business requirements and service-level agreements (SLAs).
  • Identify the most appropriate data sources for specific analytical or operational use cases.
  • Perform initial data quality checks to validate extracted data and flag inconsistencies before downstream consumption.

Data Modeling and Architecture

  • Analyze complex data elements, data flows, system dependencies, and relationships to inform conceptual, logical, and physical data models.
  • Develop Logical Data Models and Physical Data Models, including data warehouse and data mart schemas.
  • Define relational tables, primary and foreign keys, indexes, and stored procedures to create a high-performance data architecture.
  • Evaluate existing data models and physical databases to identify variations, inconsistencies, and improvement opportunities.
  • Design efficient data flows and propose innovative solutions to system integration challenges.

Code Development and Testing

  • Write production-grade code in appropriate programming languages, balancing business, technical, and data requirements.
  • Create comprehensive test cases to validate proposed solution designs and ensure code reliability.
  • Develop proofs of concept (POCs) for new technologies, tools, and architectural approaches.
  • Deploy code to production environments using automated CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Maintain clear code documentation, playbooks, and development updates to support team collaboration.

Applied Business Acumen

  • Provide strategic recommendations to business stakeholders on addressing complex data-driven challenges.
  • Develop compelling business cases for projects with projected ROI or cost-saving outcomes.
  • Translate high-level business requirements into well-defined projects, activities, and tasks aligned with broader business strategy.
  • Recommend new processes, tools, and approaches to improve operational efficiency and innovation.

Data Governance and Stewardship

  • Establish, align, and report on data governance operations and recommendations.
  • Implement data governance practices in collaboration with business partners and peer teams.
  • Interpret company and regulatory policies on data usage, privacy, and protection.
  • Educate cross-functional teams on data governance processes, policies, standards, and guidelines.
  • Provide recommendations for updates or improvements to existing data governance frameworks.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Leadership

  • Provide expert guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, supporting their technical growth and career development.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across product, engineering, analytics, and business units.
  • Promote and uphold company policies, procedures, mission, values, and ethical standards through training and leadership.
  • Evaluate the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives, recommending improvements for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Create training documentation and conduct knowledge-sharing sessions on data modeling best practices.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).
