Job Description

Overview The Industrial Energy System Modeler will play a key role in supporting transformative changes across the U.S. industrial sector. This position is ideal for engineers and scientists passionate about industrial sustainability, energy efficiency, and next‑generation clean heat technologies. You will work with utilities, industrial clients, government agencies, and national laboratories to evaluate emerging technologies, assess their applicability in real industrial systems, and help guide decarbonization strategies. This role blends engineering rigor, techno‑economic modeling, and real‑world problem‑solving with strong client engagement and communication in a collaborative, innovation‑focused environment. You will be expected not only to analyze technologies, but also to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences. This is a high‑growth opportunity where you will take increasing ownership of projects over time and help shape emerging programs and processes. What You’ll Do Perform technical performance modeling of emerging industrial technologies such as industrial heat pumps, electrode boilers, electric dryers/ovens, and other clean heat systems. Conduct industrial process modeling and unit‑operations analysis to evaluate technology fit within complex facility systems. Execute techno‑economic analyses including feasibility studies, payback modeling, cost‑benefit assessments, and ROI calculations. Evaluate site‑specific applicability, determining whether a given emerging technology is technically and economically viable in a facility’s processes. Support technology landscape scanning, including assessment of new clean heat technologies and early‑stage innovations. Contribute to analysis and evaluation of emerging concepts such as load flexibility and grid‑interactive technologies (experience preferred but not required). Develop clear, compelling reports, models, and presentations used by internal teams, utilities, and clients. Collaborate with vendors, utilities, and stakeholders to collect data, validate assumptions, and refine technology assessments. Communicate technical findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences, helping stakeholders understand the practical and strategic implications of emerging technologies. Use digital tools—including AI, Copilot, Excel, and other modeling platforms—to accelerate analysis and documentation. (This role includes a mix of analytical work and stakeholder engagement, with approximately a 50/50 balance over time.) Required Technical Skills Strong proficiency in technology performance modeling, including understanding real‑world vs. theoretical equipment performance. Hands‑on experience with industrial process modeling or unit operations modeling. Demonstrated ability to conduct techno‑economic analysis (TEA). Engineering or analytical background (Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, Process, or related). High-level analytical proficiency in Excel or similar modeling tools. Preferred Technical Skills Experience with clean heat technologies (industrial heat pumps, electrode boilers, electric ovens/dryers). Knowledge of utility energy programs, decarbonization strategies, or industrial energy efficiency. Consulting experience—technical communication, client engagement, and stakeholder facilitation. Exposure to startup environments, innovation ecosystems, or early‑stage technology evaluation. Familiarity with emerging industrial electrification or decarbonization markets. Exposure to load flexibility, grid‑interactive technologies, or demand-side energy strategies (nice‑to‑have). Soft Skills Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical analysis into business‑relevant insights and clearly explain complex concepts to non‑technical audiences. Collaborative and comfortable working in highly cross‑functional, fast‑paced environments. Detail‑oriented but able to prioritize effectively—understanding when an 80% solution is appropriate in iterative, pilot‑driven environments. Curious, self‑directed learner who is eager to grow, take on new challenges, and expand responsibilities over time. Comfortable navigating ambiguity in early‑stage program development. Consultative mindset and confidence interacting directly with utilities, industrial customers, and vendors. High emotional intelligence and ability to build trust in client‑facing situations.
