Description The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Washington invites applications for three (3) teaching faculty positions at the rank of Teaching Associates, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2026, or thereafter. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a 100% virtual, full-time basis (two (2) at .90 FTE and one (1) at .70 FTE) for a twelve-month, annual appointment beginning September 1, 2026, or thereafter. The base salary range for this position will be $11,544 - $15,630 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Please note, this represents only the base salary. The successful candidate will be expected to complete the following essential functions and duties for this role.   • Conduct new patient clinical assessments, establish OUD diagnoses, and link patients with ongoing comprehensive, longitudinal care services.
  • Initiate buprenorphine treatment for OUD, provide patient counseling and expectant management to assist and treat opioid withdrawal symptoms.
  • Assist in reducing barriers to buprenorphine starts by collaborating with a team of healthcare professionals (i.e. physicians, pharmacists, etc.)
  • Provide culturally sensitive healthcare to a diverse patient population, consistently upholding University service standards.
  • Provide timely and accurate patient care documentation, complying with all University risk management reporting guidelines and information data compliance policies.
  • Assist in patient care guidelines and administrative policy development and train clinic staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as requested to support operations and patient care practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated expertise in substance use disorder care, including evidence-based treatment with medications for OUD, harm reduction practices and knowledge of diagnostic criteria.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a spirit of cooperation and respect, upholding the highest standards of confidentiality when working with patients, providers, and colleagues in potentially high-pressure environments
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with a commitment to continuous quality and service improvement.
  • Consistently presents a professional image and demeanor in appearance and conduct
  • Skilled at prioritizing tasks when there are multiple patients or competing demands.
  • Capable of working independently in a remote/virtual setting while also seeking assistance appropriately.
  • Proficient with electronic medical records systems, especially Epic.
  • Proficient in multitasking includes typing, speaking, and accessing information from multiple applications during telephone interviews with patients.
  • Able to work independently, problem-solve and identify resources to address technological needs.
  • Demonstrates efficiency and accuracy with business systems and applications, including:
  • Telephone and voicemail system
  • Clinical Workstation platforms (Epic and other EMRs)
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Zoom
  • Other systems line tools as developed or implemented
  • Reliable in working full shift as scheduled to meet patient and business needs.

This role seeks to provide virtual health care to patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) seeking to initiate buprenorphine, or seeking a bridge prescription for patients who have an unexpected gap in existing care. The Virtual Addiction Care clinic will serve a variety of patients including those over the age of 13, pregnant patients, and those with a variety of comorbidities. Visits are on-demand, low-barrier and synchronous telehealth visits using video or audio-only technology. Interpreter services are available for patients who do not speak English as their primary language. This position will work closely with our Linkage to Care Coordinators (LTCC’s) that help link patients to longitudinal care in their area. This role centers on ensuring that every patient encounter receives efficient, accessible, high quality, respectful and responsive health care for OUD.

Qualifications

Applicants for this teaching faculty position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Candidate must have graduated from one of the following:
  • ARNP’s - An accredited school of nursing AND successful completion of an approved Nurse Practitioner program
  • Preferred: Master’s level education or above
  • PA’s - An accredited Physician Assistant (PA) studies program.
  • Candidates must reside in Washington state
  • Candidates must have full licensure as an ARNP or PA in Washington State
  • Candidates must be board eligible or board certified as an ARNP or PA
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 1-year of experience with public health or addiction medicine
  • Preferred: Telemedicine or Addiction Medicine clinic 1-year experience
  • Candidates must have experience working with interdisciplinary and collaborative teams
